Polycrystalline diamond scriber cutting wheel and its method of construction
A scriber tool for cutting glass is formed from an article comprising a polycrystalline diamond. The polycrystalline diamond construction is formed by milling a tungsten carbide powder with a binder material and a mass of carbon to form a milled powder, the binder material comprising cobalt, and the mass of carbon comprising any one or more of graphite or amorphous carbon in an amount corresponding to the equivalent carbon content (ETC) with respect to the milled tungsten carbide powder of equal to or more than around 6.2 wt.%. The milled powder is compacted to form a green body, which is sintered to form a first pre-composite body, which in turn is sintered to form a cemented carbide substrate. The substrates and diamond particles are added to a canister, which is treated along with a solvent material at around 6 GPa or greater and a high temperature to sinter together the diamond grains to form a polycrystalline diamond compact element. A cemented carbide substrate is machined from the polycrystalline diamond material to leave the polycrystalline diamond construction.
