PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio communication system capable of reducing power consumption.SOLUTION: A radio communication system includes an on-vehicle machine mounted on a vehicle, and a portable machine which can be carried by a user. The on-vehicle machine includes a first transmission section for wirelessly transmitting an identification code of the vehicle or the on-vehicle machine intermittently toward the outside of the vehicle, and a detection section for detecting the existence of the portable machine by receiving a response signal wirelessly transmitted from the portable machine. The portable machine includes: a receiving antenna for receiving the identification code; a first collation section for collating the identification code received by the receiving antenna with a code registered in the portable machine; and a transmission control section wirelessly transmitting the response signal when collation by the first collation section is established, and not transmitting the response signal when the collation by the first collation section is not established.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
