To provide a sand lifting device and a sand lifting method that prevent failures such as occlusion inside a sand lifting pipe even when a lot of sedimentary sand flows into a grit chamber.SOLUTION: A sand lifting device includes: a sand lifting pipe 3 provided with a suction port 2 at the tip thereof and provided to each flow channel 201 through which a sand lifting pump 6 lifts sand; one or a plurality of washing water supply pipes 11 provided to the sand lifting pipe 3 to supply washing water from the sand lifting pipe 3 to the suction part 2; and a pump shut-off valve 7 provided on a suction side of the sand lifting pump 6 to shut-off the sand lifting pump 6.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
