To provide a mating material precursor for friction damper capable of stabilizing a friction coefficient of a friction damper, and a manufacturing method thereof; a mating material for friction damper and a manufacturing method thereof; and a friction damper.SOLUTION: A mating material precursor 2 forming a mating material of a friction material for friction damper is made of a steel plate, and has a rough surface 2a on which a transfer layer 3 is formed. A mating material 9 has the mating material precursor 2, and the transfer layer 3 formed on the rough surface 2a. A friction damper 100 has a mating material 10, and a friction material 30, wherein the mating material 10 and the friction material 30 are assembled to each other, and the transfer layer 3 and the friction material 30 are mutually slidable.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
