To provide a damping device which generates damping force according to a magnitude of earthquake force.SOLUTION: A damping device includes: a cylindrical body; a rotating body which rotates relative to the cylindrical body; a screw shaft which penetrates through the rotating body and linearly moves along an axial direction; a nut member which is fixed to the rotating body and threadedly engages with the screw shaft to convert linear motion of the screw shaft into rotational motion of the rotating body; a holder which rotatably holds the screw shaft; and a brake member which is provided at the holder and moves between a rotation allowable position where rotation of the screw shaft is allowed and a rotation stop position where the rotation of the screw shaft is stopped.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
