To provide a mechanical seal member including a composite material coating showing excellent performance.SOLUTION: A coating coated on a base material consisting of metal or ceramics and including a composite coating consisting of two or more kinds of inorganic compounds including silicon carbide is obtained by controlling the hardness and elastic modulus of the composite coating and the ration of the cube of the hardness to the square of the elastic modulus.
