To provide a mechanical seal member including a composite material coating showing excellent performance.SOLUTION: A coating coated on a base material consisting of metal or ceramics and including a composite coating consisting of two or more kinds of inorganic compounds including silicon carbide is obtained by controlling the hardness and elastic modulus of the composite coating and the ration of the cube of the hardness to the square of the elastic modulus. 【課題】優れたパフォーマンスを示す複合材料被膜を備えるメカニカルシール部材を提供する。【解決手段】金属又はセラミックスからなる基材に被覆される被膜であって、炭化ケイ素を含む２種類以上の無機化合物からなる複合被膜を含み、前記複合被膜の硬度と弾性率と硬度の3乗と弾性率の２乗の比が調整された被膜を提供する。これによって、基材単体よりも優れた特性を有する複合材を提供することができる。【選択図】なし
