The present invention provides a method for constructing a suspension bridge supported by lateral cables, and a suspension bridge constructed thereby. The method comprises: a first installation step for first and second handrail coupling parts (31, 36), in which respective side parts of the first and second handrail coupling parts are fixed and coupled to respective first and second support cables (21, 22) while the first and second handrail coupling parts (31, 36) are spaced apart from each other by a distance while facing each other; a first installation step for molds (40), in which both ends of lower ends of sides and both ends of lower ends of the other sides of the molds (40) are respectively coupled to first support plates (32) of the first handrail coupling parts (31) and second support plates (37) of the second handrail coupling parts (36) first installed adjacent to each other; a second installation step for the molds (40), in which when the molds (40) are first installed, the first and second handrail coupling parts (31, 36) are sequentially installed while being spaced apart from each other by a distance in a state in which the first and second handrail coupling parts face each other in the direction of a second main tower (18), and then first and second auxiliary temporary cables (28, 29) connected to first and second temporary cables (26, 27) are sequentially coupled to the first and second support plates (32, 37) of the first and second handrail coupling parts (31, 36) adjacent to the molds (40) while sequentially moving the first and second auxiliary temporary cables (28, 29) in the direction of the second main tower (18); a step of respectively removing the first and second temporary cables (26, 27) from a first main tower (13) and the second main tower (18); and a step of Installing first and second handrail cables (51, 56) between the pluralities of first and second support cables (21, 22).
