In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a damping function is applied to enable a sliding door to smoothly be opened and closed, wherein even small force can make the sliding door move. One embodiment of the present invention provides a damping device for a sliding door, which comprises a pawl mounted on a sliding door and a damping unit disposed at one side surface of a door frame where the sliding door is mounted to damp the sliding door, wherein the damping unit includes: a hooking unit consisting of a hooking projection and a sliding protrusion, wherein the hooking projection is hooked to the pawl when the sliding door is opened and closed; a piston rod shortened when the sliding door is opened and extended when the sliding door is closed, based on whether the hooking unit is hooked to the pawl or not; a cylinder body where an inner fluid is compressed when the piston rod is shortened and the inner fluid is expanded when the piston rod is extended; a damper accommodation unit fixed to one side surface of the door frame to accommodate the hooking unit, the piston rod, and the cylinder body therein and opened toward the pawl in order to make the hooking projection exposed, wherein the sliding protrusion protrudes from one side surface thereof to move back and forth in a predetermined direction and a departure-preventing long groove for preventing the sliding protrusion from being dislodged is formed; a moving pulley interposed between the hooking unit and the piston rod; and a wire wound up on the moving pulley to deliver moving force between the hooking unit and the piston rod.
