A vehicle control system (1) comprises body control modules (BCM[1] (10a), BCM[2] (10b)) for controlling vehicles and a user identification device (UID) (40) that is in the possession of a user and is used when authenticating the BCM[1] (10a) and the BCM[2] (10b). The UID (40) uses low frequency (LF) communication to communicate with the BCM[2] (10b) so as to change the authentication information for authenticating with the UID (40) in the BCM[2] (10b), and when notification that the authentication information has been changed is received from the BCM[2] (10b), the UID (40) uses radio frequency (RF) communication, which differs from the LF communication, to communicate with the BCM[1] (10a), which differs from the BCM[2] (10b).
