Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Zustandsschätzung von Lage und Orientierung von mehreren zueinander über Gelenke (J1, J2) beweglichen Modulen eines gemeinsamen Systems mittels Inertialsensoren (S1, S2), die an den Modulen angeordnet sind. Dabei wird zumindest ein Vektorpaar ( si n mess,i , w n ref,i oder si o mess,i , w o ref,i ) ermittelt (100, 101, 110, 111), welches kinematische Zusammenhänge zumindest eines der Gelenke (J 1, J2) und der beiden mit dem Gelenk (J 1, J2) verbundenen Module repräsentiert, und welches in die Zustandsschätzung einfließt.
