Water Quality Modeling Study of Proposed Reregulation Dam Downstream from Buford Dam, Chattahoochee River, Georgia
A one-dimensional dynamic, riverine water quality model was applied in a study for a proposed reregulation (rereg) dam 6.3 miles (10km) below Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, Ga. The study area extended from Buford Dam to the mouth of Peachtree Creek (approximately 48 river miles). Numerous operational scenarios, with and without the proposed rereg dam, were considered. Primary concerns about the effects of dam operations on water quality were potential temperature increase and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and dissolved metals. Results generally showed that operating a rereg dam in this system would result in temperature increase in the river mainly due to the volume of warmer release from Buford Dam; in addition, rereg dam operations would lower the concentrations of dissolved metals. In the rereg pool, dissolved oxygen concentrations may be low in the fall, but should exceed 5.0 mg/1 at all times downstream. (fr)
