Behavior of Single-Story Reinforced Concrete Frames with Filler Walls
The construction and results of tests to failure of ten one-story, single-bay reinforced concrete frames are described. Three of the 18 in. high by 36 in. span frames were tested as unfilled frames. Seven of the frames were infilled with solid panels of brick masonry, using quarter-scale clay bricks. All were subjected to horizontal loads acting in the plane of the frame and applied at the level of the roof beam. The frames without filler walls failed by means of simple four-hinge flexural mechanisms. The frames with filler walls first developed cracking in the walls. After the wall cracking occurred, the frame-wall systems developed one of several possible mechanisms, depending on the strength of the frame. (Author)
