Construction of a Controlled Access Freeway, State Highway 225 from U.S. 59 to Lawndale Avenue in Houston, Harris County, Texas
The environmental statement proposed the construction of state Highway 225 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, between U.S. Highway 59 and Lawndale Avenue. The project consists of a controlled access freeway facility approximately 5.25 miles in length. The project will provide a facility to handle a large volume of motor vehicle traffic that is expected through the area. This will increase the speed and efficiency of transportation and reduce the accident rates. It will reduce the crowded conditions on other thoroughfares and freeways. The freeway will be designed to accommodate mass transit facilities as may be developed by the City of Houston. The project will displace approximately 1,244 residential units, 87 commercial and industrial buildings, 2 churches, 2 fraternal lodges and 2 fire stations. There will be some increase in the noise level because of the increased traffic volumes and a concentration of air pollutants. The net result of these two impacts are predicted to be less within the corridor if the project is built than if the project is not built. There will be a temporary reduction in the value of real estate on the local tax rolls.
