Fatigue Characteristics of Steel Used in the Eyebars of the Point Pleasant Bridge
The report comprises the final test results of a laboratory study conducted on the steel from the eyebars of the collapsed Point Pleasant Bridge. In part one the mechanical characteristics of the material were obtained. In part two nineteen specimens of surfaces were tested, and the fatigue characteristics of the material were established. In part three, to investigate the effect of the as-received surfaces, specimens with all four sides machined were tested and the results were compared to those of the previous tests. In the final phase of the study, the crack propagation through the material was monitored and the propagation rate established.
