Fatal Accident Circumstances and Epidemiology (FACE) Report, Worker Killed by Trench Cave-In in Pennsylvania
On May 3, 1985, a crew was constructing an underground water drain line (6 inch pvc pipe). After completing 135' of the 175' line to be installed, two crew members were assembling pipe sections at the bottom of a 10' trench. The surrounding ground was described as being a granular material, like sand, and no shoring was used. As the two crew members were working, the north side of the trench caved in. One worker was killed while the other sustained a broken jaw and severe lacerations.
