Laboratory Investigation on Three-Sided Structures
Egyptian Concrete Co. has recently developed a three-sided structure that adopts the advantages of both flat-top and arch-top threesided culverts: (1) more convenient and lower cost of manufacturing flat-top culverts and (2) capability of the relatively long span arch-top culverts. The legs and top slab of the three-sided structures have been designed to resist the bending moments and shear forces developed by the following loads: (1) dead load of soil top cover, (2) self-weight, (3) lateral earth pressures and (4) traffic live loads. However, the structural performance of the three-sided structures developed by Egyptian Concrete Co. needs to be evaluated through experimental and analytical investigations before they will be placed into service. Thus, a full-scale three-sided structu constructed and tested to failure in the High-Bay Structural Laboratory at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Finite element model (FEM) analysis using a commercial non-linear finite element program was also conducted to supplement the experimental work. The results are presented in this report, which includes cracking patterns, deflections, cracking load, ultimate load and reaction forces.
