Evaluation of Bituminous Pavements for High Pressure Truck Tires
The research project was undertaken to evaluate 34 in-service heavy duty pavements across Pennsylvania to identify the material properties, mix design parameters, pavement construction properties, and pavement in-service properties which are responsible for the premature rutting (permanent deformation) of some HMA pavement. Core samples were tested to determine pavement properties. The mix from cores was reheated, compacted by three different compaction methods, and analyzed for voids in total mix (VTM) and strength. Transverse surface profiles of the pavements were taken to determine maximum rut depths. Correlation analysis, linear regression analysis and stepwise multiple variable analysis methods were used to analyze the effect of some 60 independent variables on rutting. Threshold values of significant independent variables were also established. Significant independent variables affecting the rutting potential of HMA pavements included design VMA, VTM, percent natural sand in fine aggregate, and minus 200 content. It has been recommended to use Marshall Compactor with rotating base and slanted food to obtain near maximum potential compaction in the laboratory. Daily quality control of HMA mix composition, and VTM of compacted specimens is essential to minimize rutting.
