Investigation of the Failure of Roofs in Coal Mines
The report investigates the deteriorating effects of humidity, temperature, and recrystallization of minerals in shale on shale mine roof rock, and determines whether specific physical tests on roof rock samples can be used to judge the integrity of the roof. Results of several laboratory tests show that the strength characteristics of shale may be appreciably altered by moisture.
