Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
The purpose of the publication is to clarify the definition and classification of concretionary laterite and to recommend criteria for judging the suitability of laterite gravels as sub-base and base materials and for unpaved roads. The classification scheme outlined in the report takes into account the initial formation of laterite and its subsequent weathering, and can be related directly to field appearance. The dependence of effective field prospecting on a clear understanding of how laterite is formed and how it relates to the landscape is stressed. The acceptance criteria for laboratory testing procedures are examined, and checks suggested to confirm the laboratory results required for construction operations. The specifications current in tropical countries for the use of natural gravels in road pavements as well as those relating specifically to laterite are compared, as are stabilization procedures. The report recommends criteria for assessing the suitability of lateritic gravels as sub-base and base materials for unpaved roads, and ends with some practical guidance on construction with lateritic materials.
