Frost Investigations 1949-1950. Interim Report of Cold Room Studies
Cold room studies of frost action in soils are being performed by the Frost Effects Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, New England Division for the Airfields Branch, Office, Chief of Engineers, as part of a continuing program of frost investigations aimed toward establishing and improving design and evaluation criteria for roads, highways and airfield runways constructed on soils which are subject to seasonal freezing and thawing. The present laboratory studies are being made chiefly to determine the quantitative effects of individual factors which influence ice segregation in soils, such as gradation, per cent finer than 0.02 mm., per cent rock content, permeability, capillarity, proximity of water supply, density, and the initial degree of saturation in a closed system. Data from studies completed up to 15 June 1950 are presented in this interim report. (Author)
