Durability and Behavior of Prestressed Concrete Beams. Pretensioned Concrete Investigation, Progress to July 1960
The investigation comprised the fabrication and testing of 28 large, prestressed concrete beams and 412 small auxiliary specimens of the same concrete to obtain information on the factors affecting durability of prestressed concrete beams. Some of the beams contained air-entrained concrete; some did not. Most of the beams were pretensioned with high-strength steel strands, but four (fabricated for control purposes) were not. The beams were subjected to laboratory tests, and to natural weathering at exposure stations in Maine and Florida, in both loaded and unloaded conditions. The auxiliary specimens were tested to obtain information on the strength, elastic, and plastic properties of the concrete. Tests were also made to determine the creep, tensile strength, relaxation, and dynamic modulus of elasticity of the pretensioning steel strands. (Author)
