Low-Cost Paving
Schools, clinics and other community facilities in developing countries use outdoor spaces around the buildings as waiting rooms, for meetings and informal education, play, storage, and access by delivery vehicles. There is a need for paving that is durable in the local climate, under normal use, and that can be laid by local contractors using local materials. The study looks at paving suitable for these public buildings that can be laid at low cost. The aim is to compare a limited number of pavings according to the following criteria: sub-grade (foundation) requirements; construction (materials and procedures); durability; cost; and maintenance requirements.
