The project covers the instrumenting of a culvert installation to acquire test data for culverts under high fills. The information is desired to answer the question of the adequacy of present culvert design formulas when used under high fills. The culvert instrumented is elliptical with a major axis of 113 inches and a minor axis of 102 inches. The culvert is 1077 feet long with corrugations of 6-inch pitch and 2-inch radii. Report describes placing and protecting SR-4 strain gages used for measuring outside culvert strains. For each strain gage on the outside there was a matching gage on the inside. Two methods were used to measure displacement or change in pipe diameter: (1) inside micrometer method (2) photographic method. Culvert longitudinal length changes were measured with an outside micrometer. Soil pressure measurements were made with modified Carlson Soil Meters. Fill settlement was measured by means of settlement platforms. (BPR abstract).
