Annual Housing Survey: 1981. Housing Characteristics for Selected Metropolitan Areas; Tacoma, Washington, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area
This report presents statistics on housing and household characteristics from the 1981 Annual Housing Survey (AHS) for the Tacoma, Wash., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). Tables present selected housing characteristics for 1981, 1977, 1974, and 1970; characteristics of new construction units; characteristics of housing units removed from the housing inventory; and characteristics of vacant year - round housing units. Tables on indicators of housing and neighborhood quality present characteristics for owner and renter - occupied housing units. Tables of financial characteristics present data on owner - and renter - occupied housing units by family or individual income, by value of property, and by gross rent. Statistics on recent mover households cover characteristics of all occupied housing units and those occupied by recent movers, family and individual income by purchase price and mortgage amount, and characteristics of the present unit for recent movers cross - classified by characteristics of the previous unit. Additional tables show cross - tabulations of the indicators of housing and neighborhood quality by income, value, and gross rent. The data are presented for housing units with a black householder and for units with Spanish - origin householder. Separate data are shown for 'in central cities' and 'not in central cities' and for the SMSA as a whole. Survey data indicate a net gain of 23,900 housing units since the 1977 survey. About 11 percent of the total housing stock in Tacoma was constructed since 1977, most in the suburbs. Several maps are provided. The report includes table finding guides and a list of previous AHS reports. Also included are area classifications, definitions, and explanations of subject characteristics, as well as the survey questionnaire for 1981 and a discussion of the source and reliability of the estimates.
