Structural Behavior Analysis, Canyon Ferry Dam 1951-1964
During the construction of Canyon Ferry Dam, 5 strain meter clusters, 1 'no-stress' strain meter pair, 10 joint meters, 1 crack detector, and 28 resistance thermometers were embedded in the concrete of the maximum vertical section. Periodic readings of the strain meters and intermittent readings of the other meters were continued from May of 1951 through 1964 and the readings reduced to stresses and joint movements which are significant in the analysis of the structural behavior of the dam. Results show a maximum compressive stress of about 540 psi. Transient tensile stresses of about 50 psi occurred only during early ages of the concrete. (Author)
