Oil-Shale Solid-Waste Disposal: Estimation of Embankment Physical Stability and the Movement of Water and Solutes
This paper reviews the basic principles governing the physical stability and the movement of water in a retorted shale embankment. A hydrologic model was used to estimate water movement in a conceptual embankment subjected to a hypothetical, simplified construction and closure scenarios and a 30 year climatic exposure. The benefits and limitations of the approach are described in conjunction with research required to achieve more precise estimates of physical stability, and water and solute movement.
