Water management on the Rice Canal system, Pakistan
Abstract Water management problems on the Rice Canal system in Pakistan are discussed from the standpoint both of the Executive Engineer, in charge of the day-to-day operation of the canal, and of the farmers. Particular problems are identified in relation to the pattern of canal withdrawals, the high demand for water, the lack of reliable operating data, cropping calendars and field watering methods. The difficulties of making changes in large long-established systems like the Rice Canal are recognised but recommendations are made for some significant improvements, mainly in relation to the operation of the main system, which do not require a drastic dislocation of existing procedures. Similar measures may be applicable on other similar systems.
