Characteristics of cathodic protection of hydraulic turbines against cavitation
Conclusions When planning cathodic protection it is necessary to take into account the technologic characteristics of the object being protected and the properties of the environment (resistivity, aeration). The coating used jointly with cathodic polarization should provide maximum uniformity of the current distribution while having a high resistance to the effect of the cathode potential. The resistance of the oil film of the turbine bearing is used for supplying the protection current to the turbine runner. The transfer of currents to the runner should not lead to the formation of an anodic zone on the lining of the turbine chamber. To determine the effectiveness of cathodic protection it is recommended to use a two-step scheme with the installation of a common nonpolarized reference electrode and metal electrodes placed at various points of the turbine.Compensation circuits are recommended for eliminating the error in measurements of the potentials caused by an obmic drop of the voltage in the environment between the working surface of the reference electrode and the metal surface being investigated.
