Strength and failure behaviour of the bedded and foliated meta-morphic rocks from amlwch, wales, UK
Summary The strength properties and failure behaviour of the metamorphic rocks from Amlwch (Wales) have been examined by triaxial and tensile testing machines and their petrological properties by microscope. Both compressive and tensile tests on core specimens gave very scattered results; compressive strength from 1267 psi to 10519 psi (8736-72528 KN/$ m^{2} $) and tensile strength from 171 psi to 1084 psi (1179-7474 KN/$ m^{2} $). The scattering and reduction in strength values have been attributed to the presence of schistosity, bedding, foliation and other structures with their random orientations. Microscopic studies revealed that failure of the rocks took place during testing by fracturing along these natural planes of weakness, and that the presence of some poorly bonded sandy laminations were responsible for very low strength values of some core specimens.
