Structural geology of two geothermal areas in the andes: Copahue and Tuzgle (Argentina)
Abstract The geothermal areas of Copahue (South Argentina) and Tuzgle (North Argentina) are both related to recent Andean vulcanism and their setting is strongly controlled by the local structural features. In Copahue the geothermal reservoir is in fractured permeable basaltic beds, which are in an important tecto-volcanic depression. The geothermal fluid are probably conducted by gravity faults. The Tuzgle Volcano is in the central part of a tectonic depression over a thick sedimentary sequence of volcanic and continental Tertiary Upper Cretaceous and marine ordovician shales and sandstones interbedded with dacitic ignimbrites. The permeable levels of this sequence may contain the geothermal fluids and, in the south part of this field it is possible that they are in sealed gravity faults.
