Abstract The beginning of prefabricated concrete systems goes back to the 1930s, but their real development actually began after the Second World War with the growing use of cranes at building sites. The technical progress offered by the new building methods, operating with large size precast elements, was enormous and so, too, was the interest of European countries faced with a postwar housing shortage. The architectural ideas expressed in the Charter of Athens also contributed to the fascination.
