The Graphic Analysis of the Primitive Convent of the Commendatory Mothers of St. John in Zamora

The ancient monastery of St. John of Jerusalem was founded in Zamora in the middle of the 16th century. It was one of the main and most prestigious monasteries in the city. There are numerous studies that relate its history and the exploits of its dwellers, the commendatrixes of St. John. However, there is a gap in the analysis of its architecture. Starting from an urbanistic approach, the aim here is to analyze the scarce documentary sources that provide data on its architectural description, with the aim of making some initial drawings that show its composition and structure. The study process will be carried out in parallel between the historical and the graphic, where drawing has been used as an instrument at the service of research that will help to show the image of what the convent was and to confirm the location of the different elements that made up this architectural complex.
