Experiences in System Reliability Optimization Including Damage Constraints
Abstract To design an optimal structure, both the ultimate or reserve requirements of the intact system and the residual system reliability requirements of the damaged system are simultaneously used as constraints. This approach requires the use of hazard accident scenarios outlining both the damage and the probability of the initiating event. In this study, the system reliability constraints in the optimization incorporate both the initiating probability and the residual system reliability. In the paper, a constrained optimization method is used to minimize weight or cost with a range of system reliability constraints for the intact and damaged systems. The system reliability analysis leads to an array of modal failure probabilities as well as a combination of modes into an overall system failure estimate.
