New Connection Between Precast Abutment Wall and CIP Foundation Suitable for Accelerated Bridge Construction
This paper describes a new connection between a precast abutment wall and a cast-in-place foundation that was developed for rapid construction of bridge abutments. Its features include speed and simplicity of erection and generous tolerances. The concept for the foundation is referred to as a “wet” socket wall. The construction sequence is as follows: First, the wall elements are precast, with a roughened surface in the region that will eventually be embedded in the footing. Then the foundation is excavated, and a formwork is constructed. The wall elements are set, plumbed, leveled, and braced. The foundation reinforcement is then placed, and the foundation is cast. The walls have holes through which the top mat reinforcement in the foundation can be fitted. This arrangement greatly simplifies the fabrication of wall elements and speeds up the construction of the abutment. Two scaled specimens were constructed and tested as part of this research. The first specimen served as a reference specimen and was detailed according to current standards in Iceland. The second specimen included the new socket connection. Lateral-load tests on the new connection were completed in 2022.
