Field test of a flat plate structure
Abstract A load test on a portion of a six-story flat plate building was carried out to evaluate performance under high overload. Half of the portion tested had the full panel negative moment reinforcement concentrated in the column strips only. No negative moment reinforcement was provided in the middle strips. This reinforcement distribution was not consistent with the requirements of ACI 318-63. The other half, which was geometrically similar, contained negative moment reinforcement that satisfied requirements of ACI 318-63. Positive moment reinforcement in both halves was the same. Economies are achieved by the combination of the concentration of the reinforcement and the use of welded wire fabric. Test results indicate the performance or the structure to be satisfactory. Measured deflections and crack widths on both halves of the test area were similar and within acceptable limits prescribed by ACI 318-63.
