Green Road Approach in Indian Road Construction for the Sustainable Development
Abstract Growing public awareness of climate change requires transportation professionals to integrate green concepts into the transportation planning, design, construction, and operation processes. Green highways are a relatively new concept although the implementation of technologies involved in green highway design has been encouraged for many years. A green road may not look like a normal road at first glance, but with closer inspection, a driver will notice the subtle difference. More plant life grows along the shoulder; trees are planted along the road and act as wildlife buffers, thus giving a pleasant riding experience. In towns, highways become more aesthetically pleasing, and in rural areas, highways become a more natural part of the environment. Green highway can be defined by five broad topics such as conservation and ecosystem management; watershed-driven strong water management; life cycle energy and emissions reduction; recycle, reuse, and renewable; and overall societal benefits. This paper describes the factor affecting green road and the construction process of microsurfacing as a preventive wearing course of a pavement that can reduce both direct and indirect costs. Microsurfacing is environmental friendly which reduces the greenhouse gas and fuel consumption.
