Transparency
Transparency provides design professionals with specific data to evaluate the environmental impacts of products. Manufacturers can disclose data through their product literature or certifications. However, increasingly, manufacturers disclose data through declarations. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) publish environmental data calculated with a life cycle assessment. Product Category Rules (PCRs) establish a consistent framework for evaluation and calculation across a building material sector, aiming to allow for comparison of individual products within a sector. Health Product Declarations (HPDs) and the Declare Label list material ingredients, including all chemicals to a specific concentration. These declarations evaluate how many toxic chemicals are ingredients and the order of magnitude of their toxicity. Finally, a growing number of databases provide users with transparency on data. These databases vary in the number of metrics they present, and the market share or number of products they represent.
