Work of the Leningrad Metal Factory Industrial Association toward modernizing hydraulic turbines at existing hydroelectric plants
Conclusions 1. At the present time there are tested, reliable solutions for modernization of different hydraulic turbine assemblies, which substantially improve their operating characteristics. 2. The hydraulic turbine factories may not be able to systematically carry out orders for fabrication of parts intended to modernize turbine assemblies, since the existing production facilities are almost fully utilized by the planned manufacture of new machines. 3. The question of carrying out wide-planned modernization of assemblies of existing hydraulic units should be supported by governmental resolutions, with expansion and reequipping of the hydraulic turbine factories, as well as strengthening of their research base. 4. Some modernization of hydraulic turbines which have been in operation for a long time can be carried out by fabricating the parts at local shops, guided by technical studies and under the direction of specialists from the turbine factories. 5. One of the most complex aspects of the modernization of hydraulic turbines at existing plants is the replacement of worn-out blades of Kaplan-type runners and entire runners of the Francis type. This work calls for engagement of the steel-casting factories, which are already overworked even without it.
