Compression Strength of Thin Joint Masonry with Polymeric Mortar
Thin joint masonry prisms tend to yield higher values of compressive strength when compared to regular 10-mm joint masonry, due to the increased confinement effect and limited lateral expansion of the thin mortar joint. Also, the increased adhesion bond between polymeric mortar and blocks may contribute for a higher compression strength. The paper brings the initial impressions from an experimental campaign to evaluate the behavior of thin joint polymeric mortar masonry, presenting results on the compression strength of blocks, prisms and small walls. Regular-strength (15-MPa) and high-strength (60-MPa) hollow concrete blocks were considered. Polymeric mortars from two different producers were used. The mortar was tested to its tensile and compression strength and its composition estimated using thermogravimetry testing. Block to prisms strength ratio, and small-wall to prism strength ratio are presented considering the different assemblage combinations.
