Appropriate Technologies for Value Addition in Rural Indian Villages
About 70% of India’s population lives in rural villages and face challenges that cannot be solved by a single national framework. In this chapter, the authors describe a framework based on science and technology interventions in rural communities to bring about changes in the communities and transform them into smart villages. The framework has been implemented by The Sona Group in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. The Science and Technology interventions described are in the areas of Agriculture, Healthcare, Skill Development, Off-grid Energy generation, Waste to wealth generation, as well as empowerment of women and the differently abled, in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
