CRITICAL TRACTIVE STRESS OF NONUNIFORM AND BIMODAL SEDIMENTS
The adequacy of existing relationship on critical tractive stress (CTS) of sediment mixtures have been checked with available data on unimodal and bimodal sediments. From the verification, it was revealed that Patel et al. (1999) method performs satisfactorily for unimodal and weakly bimodal sediments. However, the performance of the method is far from satisfaction for sediments having Bimodality Parameter B>1.7 and geometric standard deviation σg > 3.0, i.e. for highly bimodal and'extremely nonuniform sediments. Patel et al. (1999) method, also, suffers from the limitation that the predictor for scaling parameter τ*cσ was not adequately described by them. Parametric study has been carried out, in the present study, to identify the parameters influencing CTS of the sediment mixtures with extreme nonuniformity and bimodality. Accordingly, Patel et al. (1999) method has been modified to make it applicable for both unimodal, weakly bimodal and strongly bimodal sediments. Also, a better predictor for scaling size, τ*cσ has been proposed in terms of dσ and σg.
