A few iconic works come to mind when one thinks of ‘German garden books’ published before 1750: Joseph Furttenbach the Elder's Architectura civilis of 1628, for example, or Architectura recreationis of 1640. There are Salomon Kleiner's memorable engravings in Wunderwiirdiges Kriegs- und Siegs-Lager of 1731-1738 — the extraordinary winter preparation of the orangery in the Belvedere in Vienna, for instance. German landscape historians will also be familiar with Johann Peschel's Garten Ordnung, first published in Leipzig in 1597. (It has been made more familiar through the Nordlingen reprint of 2000). Yet who outside a tiny group of cognoscenti would know of Des Schlesischen Gartners Lustiger Spatziergang (1692) by Georg Herbst or a Dissertatio physica de varia plantarum propagatione printed in Leipzig in 1695 for the student Stephan Ludwig Packbusch?
