This article by an engineer with the building design and engineering division of Nederlandse Philips Bedrijven B V, of Eindhoven, describes the basis of a computer program for ensuring desired mom temperatures in offices after night and weekend reduction. A n important parameter is the heat storage capacity of the building, it is suggested; another is the common over-capacity of the radiator central heating system. From these parameters time constants can be defined to influence the cooling-down and warm-up periods. The validity of the mathematical model was checked in several buildings in Eindhoven; the general conclusion is that relatively 'light'buildings provide more scope for energy-saving through lowering the water temperature outside working hours.
