The development of regional planning in the United Kingdom
The practice of regional planning in the United Kingdom has unfolded over more than 70 years. There have been certain continuities, but periodic adjustments to changing circumstances mean a disjointed story, with progress divided into five distinct periods: 1920–48, 1949–61, 1962–71, 1972–78 and 1979 to the present. The course of events reflects developing scope, methods and variety in regional planning and it strongly interconnects with changing political and administrative circumstances.
