Regional planning in the United States and the United Kingdom: a comparative analysis

Regional policies and planning in the United States are largely directed towards the problem of providing infrastructural support to the productive process. By contrast, in the United Kingdom effort is concentrated in the provision of employment opportunity. The policies of both countries are constrained by geographical dispersion of effort and by significant changes in programme philosophies over time. Neither nation has yet solved the inherent problem of linking regional policies to existing urban areas, although some micro-scale progress has been made in this area, particularly in the United States.
