Using Microcomputer CAD Packages in Planning
This article reviews three microcomputer based computer aided design and drafting programs (CAD)—AutoCAD, CADKEY, and Generic CADD—for their usefulness for planning applications. It gives particular attention to spatial data input techniques, environmental analysis, plan preparation, analysis, and presentation capabilities. The article concludes that microcomputer based CAD is capable of many professional planning tasks. This capability is enhanced when a variety of flexible design functions are available, and it is possible to easily use the graphic output components with auxiliary data base and analysis programs.
