History of the drainage of the valley of Mexico
This article traces the history of attempts to protect the city of Mexico from periodic flooding. The first dike, constructed in 1449 by the Aztec kings Moctezuma and Nezahualcoyotl, was subsequently destroyed by the conquistadores. The Spanish opted in 1607 for a plan devised by Enrico Martinez to drain the lagoon which almost encircled the city. This work was largely unsuccessful, and led eventually to Martinez's disgrace. It was not until the end of the 18th century that the soundness of Martinez's approach was recognized and the practical flaws in his construction were identified. A new drainage canal was finally completed in 1900, though even this has had to be supplemented in recent times by a new deep drainage project.
