Outline of small-diameter shield tunneling method (D1200-M2)
A new small-diameter tunneling system has been developed. Using this a 120 cm inner-diameter tunnel capable of accommodating 40 7.4 cm inner-diameter conduits housing telecommunications cable can be constructed. The system involves shield tunneling, where the tunnel lining is constructed of quick-setting resin mortar which is cast in-place. All underground work, including excavating, transporting and tunnel lining, are remotely controlled from a central control system equipped with a minicomputer. Using this system, actual tunnels 107 m and 200 m in length have been successfully constructed.
