Steel fiber production by machining for reinforced concrete
Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) with high toughness is going to be used increasingly in civil construction and architecture, but its wide application is restricted because of the difficulty in obtaining cheap and suitable steel fiber. This paper deals with the development of a new production process employing machining technique, in which a plain milling cutter is used to machine a steel block, and the needle shaped chip resulting from cutting is the steel fiber required. The strength of the fiber is checked for different materials and cutting conditions, and the suitable cutting condition is obtained. This fiber is used for making reinforced concrete whose strenght is comparable to that of the conventional fiber reinforced concrete. Furthermore, the production process is examined on the basis of cost comparison in which it is found to be more economical than the sheared fiber which is used at present.
