Construction materials from byproduct ferrous slag and electric arc furnace dust
A patented method of recycling by-product ferrous slag and electric arc furnace dust to produce constructional materials is described. This has the benefits of reducing the need to dump these waste products of the steelmaking process and of incorporating the heavy metals present in the dust into inert compounds that will not undergo subsequent leaching. The slag and dust are mixed with soil or foundry sand and alkali waste from aluminium surface treatment and pressed to produce a compact. Aging leads to formation of an amorphous gel that produces a volume expansion and increases the strength of the compact by binding the remaining crystalline grains together. Compressive strengths as high as 10 MPa are achieved after aging for 28 days. The new material has been used as a base for roads and airfields and for the foundations of apartment blocks and industrial waste dumps. (VDEh)
